Web Accessibility Policy

Purpose

Brigham Young University strives to ensure equal access to educational programs and activities. Technology procured, developed, or used by BYU should provide substantially similar functionality, experience, and access to users with disabilities as it provides to other users, as required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other applicable laws. Accordingly, BYU seeks to make its online courses, websites, and web-based applications (Web Content) accessible.

Policy

BYU has developed University Web Accessibility Guidelines (Guidelines) to be used in the design and enhancement of Web Content on university-affiliated websites. New Web Content must conform to the Guidelines. Older Web Content that is used to conduct core university business or academic activities should be brought into conformance with the Guidelines when reasonably possible. Vendors seeking to provide information technology services to BYU must demonstrate that their products satisfy the Guidelines.

Scope

This policy applies to Web Content created and maintained by any BYU college, department, program, or unit. Specifically, any Web Content within the BYU domain (byu.edu) that is used in university programs or activities is subject to this policy.

Implementation

University Communications and the Office of Information Technology are responsible for establishing the Guidelines, providing information about and training for the Guidelines, and conducting content audits to ensure that Web Content meets the Guidelines.

Responding to Accessibility Issues

Personnel responsible for Web Content should take the following steps as soon as reasonably possible if they become aware of accessibility issues:

  • As applicable, acknowledge receipt of any messages that raise a concern, in writing, to the user who raised the concern and retain copies of the message and response.
  • Verify the issue by reviewing the Guidelines.
  • Take the necessary steps to resolve the issue in compliance with the standards established in the Guidelines.

Additionally, university webmasters should periodically test Web Content for accessibility and address any accessibility issues.
