Digital Content Accessibility Policy

Purpose

Brigham Young University strives to ensure equal opportunities for all qualified individuals to participate in its educational programs and activities. Accordingly, BYU seeks to make its digital content accessible. This policy addresses digital content accessibility, including what is commonly referred to as web accessibility, as required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other applicable laws.

Definitions

Accessibility or Accessible means that people with disabilities can use Digital Content to receive information, take part in interactions, and use features and services with substantially similar effectiveness and ease of use as people without disabilities.

Digital Content means online courses, websites, mobile applications, official social media content, electronic documents, videos, audio, forms, kiosks, and other web-based and digital materials.

Policy

BYU has developed Digital Content Accessibility Guidelines (Guidelines) that establish the technical standards for Digital Content Accessibility on university-affiliated platforms. New Digital Content must conform to the Guidelines. Existing Digital Content should be brought into conformance when required by law as explained in the Guidelines. Vendors seeking to provide information technology products or services to BYU must demonstrate their products or services conform to the Guidelines.

Scope

This policy applies to those who create and maintain Digital Content in any BYU college, department, program, or unit. Specifically, any Digital Content used in university programs or activities is subject to this policy, whether hosted within the BYU domain (byu.edu), on third-party platforms, or delivered through mobile applications.

Implementation

The Disability Standards Compliance Committee, the Office of Information Technology, and the University Strategic Communications Committee are responsible for establishing the Guidelines, providing information about and training for the Guidelines, and conducting content audits to assess compliance with the Guidelines.

Responding to Accessibility Issues

Personnel responsible for Digital Content should take the following steps as soon as reasonably possible if they become aware of Accessibility issues:

  • As applicable, acknowledge receipt of any messages that raise a concern, in writing, to the user who raised the concern.
  • Verify the issue by reviewing the Guidelines.
  • Take the necessary steps to resolve the issue in compliance with the standards established in the Guidelines.

Additionally, university site administrators should periodically test Digital Content for Accessibility and address any Accessibility issues.

Nothing in this policy limits any applicable exceptions or defenses permitted by law.
